Commonly Cluttered Spots Around the House and What to Do About Them
Clutter can drive you completely crazy. Unfortunately, those you live with may be completely unbothered by clutter, which can be frustrating. If clutter is a source of conflict, try some of the tips below to get it under control.
Kitchen Countertops
Getting a handle on clutter requires you to do two things: First, figure out where all this stuff is coming from. Second, manage it as soon as it comes into the house. Mail is a huge source of clutter. Purge regularly and ruthlessly. Invest in an attractive container or basket to sit on the counter. In this, put all of the mail you want or need to keep, such as letters you want to read, magazines you enjoy, or bills you need to address. Invest in a plastic container that you keep out of sight, and in this put all of the things you need to shred and recycle, such as credit card offers, ads, and catalogs you don’t need. Open mail and shred regularly as it works with your schedule, or daily if possible.
Garages
When getting clutter under control in your garage, be sure to think creatively. For example, milk crates are a great storage bin for some tools, but small hand tools and hardware will store better in a plastic bin or a small trash can. Avoid cardboard when possible. If you can’t see it, you probably won’t remember you have it and may wind up buying another screwdriver or hinge. If you’re a fan of DIY projects, don’t consider the project complete until all of the tools are put away. Frequently tidying up keeps a garage organized and keeps it from turning into an overwhelming disaster. Invest in shelves and keep the things you regularly use on a shelf that’s easy for you to access.
Office
Your office needs to be ready to go to work. Keep the stuff you need to deal with near your computer. Once you’ve dealt with it, you’ll either need to file it or shred it. Where many people get into trouble is that they keep too much documentation or don’t file regularly. A year’s worth of filing is a disaster. A month’s worth of filing is manageable. Stay on top of bills by payday and try to file by the last day of the month.
Clutter is a never-ending battle. However, with focus and planning, you can stay on top of it before it takes over your home. The trick is to manage what comes in and deal with it instead of stacking it somewhere and contributing to the mess.
