No one wants rodents in their home, but sometimes rodents get in anyway. They leave a smell everywhere, and they can cause damage to your property. How can you clean up after a rodent infestation?

Find the Source

First thing to do after knowing your home has a rodent infestation is to find the source. Rodents commonly make nests in kitchens, bathrooms, and bedrooms. You can find them by looking for signs of rodents: nibbled food or cardboard containers, usually left near a wall. Rodents love dark, out of the way spaces as they tend to be shy, but that doesn’t mean they will leave your house on their own—you’re going to need to kill them by either poison or traps.

Clean Up Any Urine or Droppings

After the rodents have been disposed of, it is important to clean up any urine or droppings. Because rodents frequently carry the disease, it is important to not make contact with any of their bodily fluids without gloves. You will want to clean up the area and sanitize it. One way that you can do that is by spraying a solution of bleach mixed with water on the dead rodent or nest, letting it sit for five minutes before wiping it up. It is important to be thorough when you clean up after a rodent infestation because you want to make sure there’s no trace of the furry creatures.

Prevent Future Infestations

If you know that you have a hole in the wall where mice creep in, to prevent future infestations, block up the hole. Poison is another method that you can utilize to keep rodents away, although poison can be deadly to have laying around, so it is important to exercise caution when using rodent poison. Another alternative may be placing traps in dark locations where mice like to frequent and wherever you found a rodent. There are many different types of traps and they’re not very expensive. While some traps are more effective than others, they can at least let you know if you have a rodent infestation again.

Rodent infestations can be frustrating and disgusting to deal with, especially in the aftermath. If you must clean up from a rodent infestation, remember to stay calm as you search for the source. Then sanitize the area and use traps and poison to prevent a future rodent infestation.
